‘Pic(k)’ of the Week for the week of May 20, 2018
Well! For something that started out with the best of intentions – sharing with you week by week all of the wonderful news of our Church Garden and Faithful Food Program…it has not gone as I had hoped. As with any new startup I guess there are always unexpected circumstances that come up…but this ‘spring’ has been quite the challenge. And the storm last week brought even more difficulty as the smaller greenhouse, which we had just rebuilt last month after it collapsed from the intense ‘spring nor’easters’, fell once again as it was no match for the high winds which, as you can see from the picture, completely flattened it and significantly damaged the ends and hoops. But somewhere…after 20 plus years of farming, I know that when it comes to Mother Nature you need to be willing to take the good with the bad. So, although it has put us behind a bit schedule-wise and financially we will persevere and keep on moving on…
Fortunately the larger greenhouse which contained all of our seedlings and the now blossoming pea plants withstood the storm and so we will continue to put out plants and seeds in the coming weeks in anticipation of a slightly later but no less spectacular harvest season! Yeah, when it comes to farming it helps to keep your ‘glass half-full’! And so we move forward, step by step…because in the end it is truly about working together for the betterment of all…remember…folks who farm together, grow together!
